How to Execute the Perfect Surprise Proposal on the Great Wall of China
Traveling from halfway across the world to propose is a grand gesture. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a wonderful couple from Mexico who chose the Mutianyu Great Wall for their engagement. They wanted the romantic backdrop of Beijing’s “Golden Autumn” (October), where the mountains are painted in gold and red.
However, planning a surprise in a foreign country where you don’t speak the language can be stressful. As a local Beijing photographer, I don’t just take pictures; I help design the entire experience.

Here is the behind-the-scenes story of our “Backpack Strategy” and my guide for anyone planning a proposal in Beijing.
The “Stranger Photo” Ruse: How We Kept It a Secret for Proposal on the Great Wall
The biggest challenge for a proposal photographer is being in the right spot without ruining the surprise. For this shoot, we planned a specific ruse that worked seamlessly.
The Plan:
The Setup: I arrived at the location—a scenic spot near the cable car station—well ahead of time. I placed my backpack on the ground and walked a short distance away, pretending to admire the view, this way, the client knew where the ideal spot was.
The Approach: The couple arrived. Seeing a “safe” spot with a photographer nearby, the groom (as planned) suggested the location was nice. They walked over and asked if I could help take a picture of them with their phone.
The Setup: This was my chance. I took their phone, but then I helped them adjust their standing position and background angle, ensuring the composition was flawless for my professional camera too.
The Signal: Once the framing was ideal and the light was right, I said the code phrase we had agreed upon: “It’s perfect.”
The Moment: Hearing the signal, the groom dropped to one knee. The reaction was pure, unposed emotion.

The Location: Why Watchtowers 7 to 9?
For optimal photos and logistics, I highly recommend the route between Watchtower No. 7 and No. 9 at Mutianyu.
Accessibility: It is close to the cable-way(chairlift) station, meaning you don’t arrive at the proposal spot sweaty and exhausted.
The View: This section offers a stunning, steep perspective of the Wall winding into the distance, perfect for that epic “wide shot.”
The Exit: After the proposal and a romantic portrait session, we took the Toboggan (Slide-way) down the mountain. It’s a fun, memorable way to end the date!

More Than Photos: A Full Beijing Service
One concern many foreign guests have is navigating Beijing’s complex traffic and logistics. You might be thinking, “I don’t have a tour guide, how do I get there?”
I bridge the gap between a photographer and a local guide:
Private Transport: I can coordinate chartered car services (private drivers) to pick you up from your hotel and take you directly to the Great Wall entrance, ensuring you arrive relaxed and on time.
Itinerary Planning: Beyond the proposal, I can help you plan the rest of your Beijing trip, suggesting authentic local spots that usually only locals know.
Client Experience
The result of our careful planning was a stunning set of photos and a stress-free experience for the couple. Here is what they had to say:
“Amazing work from Vincent! He is very professional and he did a wonderful shooting with us! I highly recommend him! Thank you so much Vincent to be part of this moment!”
