The Challenge: “I’m Freaking Out!”

My client originally planned to propose to his girlfriend of 9 years in Chicago. A last-minute schedule change brought them to Beijing for a family visit. He emailed me:

“I have a three-part challenge… I’m canceling my plans to propose in Chicago to be in Beijing… I have no idea where it’s romantic, esp in the winter… I’m freaking out!”

He needed a location, a plan, and a photographer he could trust—all within a few days.

Why Choose a Summer Palace Proposal?

Beijing in winter can be cold, but the light is often crystal clear. We skipped the crowded tourist spots and chose the Zhichun Pavilion at the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan).

The Secret Plan

To keep the surprise intact, we framed the meeting as a casual travel photography session.
The plan was simple but effective:

  1. We started with casual portraits around the lake.
  2. I directed them to stand back-to-back for a posed shot.
  3. The cue: When I shouted “Perfect,” the groom-to-be turned around and got down on one knee.
