I have just welcomed the first secret proposal of 2026!

The air was crisp, the winter light was soft, and the Great Wall looked majestic. For this couple, we planned everything to perfection. However, the most common question I get from clients is: “Which route should we take?”

Depending on your fitness level and the style of photos you want, there are two distinct ways to plan your Mutianyu Great Wall Proposal.

Here is my guide to help you choose, based on our first 2026 success story.

1. Logistics: Why a Private Car is Essential

Before we talk about routes, let’s talk about arrival. To get the best photos without crowds, you need to arrive early.

The Problem: Public buses often arrive after 9:30 AM, when tour groups start to appear. The Solution: I strongly recommend booking a Private Car (Charter Service).

  • The Benefit: A private driver can pick you up from your Beijing hotel at 6:30 or 7:00 AM. You arrive at the wall before the rush, sleeping comfortably on the way. This preserves your energy for the proposal!

Route Option 1: The “Classic & Fun” Route (Recommended)

This was the choice for our 2026 couple. It offers the classic winding wall background and a fun finish.

  • Transport: Take the Chairlift (open-air) up to Watchtower No. 6.
  • The Proposal Spot: We set up the surprise near Watchtower No. 6. This area is famous for the “Z-shape” winding wall background. It is iconic and very photogenic.
  • The Walk: After the “Yes,” we hiked west toward Watchtower No. 10. This is a moderate walk with beautiful watchtowers.
  • The Exit: We hiked back and took the Toboggan (Slide Rail) down. This is a huge highlight for couples—sliding down the mountain together is pure joy!

Route Option 2: The “Hero & High View” Route

If you are a fitness enthusiast and want panoramic, high-altitude views, this is for you.

  • Transport: Take the Cable Car (enclosed box) up to Watchtower No. 14.
  • The Proposal Spot: You can propose on the large platform at No. 14, or hike up toward No. 20.
  • The Walk: Hike west from No. 14 to Watchtower No. 20 (Heroes’ Slope). This is the highest point of the restored section. The view is endless, but be warned: the stairs are steep and tiring!
  • The Exit: You must return to No. 14 and take the Cable Car back down (No Toboggan on this side).

Summary: Which one to choose?

  • Choose Route 1 (Tower 6) if you want the classic Great Wall look, less sweating, and the fun Toboggan ride.
  • Choose Route 2 (Tower 14-20) if you want to conquer the highest point and prefer grand, wide landscape views.
